Doctors in India operating on a two-year-old child who was born with four arms and four legs say that the surgery is going well.Lakshmi Tatma is joined at the pelvis to what is, in effect, a headless, undeveloped twin.
A team of surgeons in the southern city of Bangalore is working in shifts to separate Lakshmi's spinal column and kidney from that of her twin.
It is hoped the procedure will allow her to survive beyond adolescence.
"It has been so far so good," hospital spokesman Siva Rudrayya told reporters.
"She is responding well, although there were a lot of complications. Doctors believe she has an 80% chance of survival," he said.

NEW DELHI: Reliance Industries moved swiftly on Tuesday to deny a report that company chief Mukesh Ambani has become the world's richest man thanks to a surge in stock market. An agency report putting his wealth at $63.2 billion hailed his rise as another triumph for the nation's booming economy.
But Reliance said Ambani was not quite so rich after all, with a net worth of somewhere in the region of $50 billion.
The multi-billionaire was listed by Forbes magazine earlier this year in 14th place among the world's richest people with an estimated wealth of $20.1 billion, way behind Microsoft's Bill Gates on $56 billion.
The breakneck rise in benchmark Sensex index, which rocketed to 20,000 points on Monday, after gaining nearly 4,000 points in six weeks, meant 49-year-old Ambani was now worth 63.2 billion.
"They are completely wrong. They have done double calculations," Reliance spokesman Tushar Pania said, explaining that Ambani, 49, does not have a direct share in Reliance Petroleum.

The day after the Federal Reserve Board of US lowered the interest rates to 4.5%, crude oil prices pushed above $96 per barrel. This price is a full $20 above the peak price set post-Katrina. Not only that, gold prices surged above $800 today. It is close to an all time high! How would you interpret this rise in the prices of precious metals and scarce commodities? The markets' clear statement is: we don't like your printing more and more dollars.

Noveber 1st is a day to remember not just in the history of Telugu people, but also in Indian history. Gandhiji envisioned an idealistic India in which people of all faiths and languages lived in harmony. How naive! Nehru, who hardly has any ideas of his own, embraced Gandhi's vision.
Nehru and Rajaji were on record saying that creation of a separate state for Telugu speaking people was not a good idea. Even if linguistic states were to be formed, they both were against making Madras a part of Andhra. On 19 October 1952, Potti Sriramulu went on indefinite hunger strike demanding a separate state for Telugu speaking people.
On December 3, Nehru wrote to Rajagopalachari: "Some kind of fast is going on for the Andhra Province and I get frantic telegrams. I am totally unmoved by this and I propose to ignore it completely". By this time Sriramulu had not eaten for six weeks. As his ordeal went on, support for the cause grew. Hartals were called in many towns. The sociologist Andre Beteille, travelling to Madras from Calcutta at this time, recalls having his train stopped at Vizag by an angry mob shouting slogans against Rajaji and Nehru.
Nehru now recognised the force of popular sentiment. On December 12, he wrote again to Rajaji, suggesting that the time had come to accept the Andhra demand. "Otherwise complete frustration will grow among the Andhras, and we will not be able to catch up with it". But the formal announcement was delayed, and Sriramulu continued his fast. On the 15th of December Sriramulu died. The next day all hell broke loose. Government offices were attacked, and trains stopped and defaced. The damage to state property ran into crores of rupees. Several protesters were killed in police firings. On the 16th, Nehru made a statement saying a state of Andhra would come into being, but its boundaries would be decided by an independent Commission. In March 1953, the Telugu districts of Madras were identified for separation; later, these were joined by Telugu-speaking areas of Hyderabad to constitute the present state of Andhra Pradesh.
In my childhood I remember reading that the commission recommended that Madras be a part of Andhra and Tirupathi be a part of Tamil Nadu. But in the end Madras went to Tamil Nadu and Tirupathi became part of Andhra. The commission also recommended that Andhra will get 50% of the power generated by Neiveli power plant. Not a single KW of Neiveli power was received by Andhra since 1952.
The above are some of my observations of history and excerpts from an article titled 'The Battle for Andhra' by Ramachandra Guha in The Hindu

Dalip Singh Saund was the first ever congressman of Indian descent. Mr. Saund represented the 29th district of the state of California from January 3, 1957–January 3, 1963. He was the first Asian American, Indian American and Sikh member of the United States Congress.
From Wikipedia:
Born in Chhajulwadi, Punjab, India, to a Sikh family , Mr. Saund received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Punjab in 1919.
He immigrated to the United States, originally to study agriculture at the University of California, Berkeley. While at the university, he obtained a master's degree (1922) and a Ph.D. (1924), both in mathematics. He thereafter remained in the United States, becoming a successful farmer.
Later, he campaigned to allow "Hindus," as all people of South Asian descent were called at that time, to become naturalized citizens. After the Luce-Celler Act was passed in 1946, he applied for naturalization and became an American citizen in 1949. He ran for election in 1950 as a Justice of the Peace for Westmoreland township, California, and won the election, but his election was thrown out as he had been a citizen for less than a year. He later ran again for the same post and won.
41 years after Mr. Saund retired from congress, Bobby Jindal became the second person of Indian origin to get elected as a congressman from the state of Louisiana in 2004.

McLaughlin, the Sunday political commentator mentioned on this past Sunday that US and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf have a secret power-share agreement in which he would share power with Benazir Bhutto. No wonder Musharraf granted a controversial amnesty to Bhutto from the charges in Pakistan. The right wing nuts would have you believe that the most dangerous nation on earth is Iran. Newsweek magazine begs to differ. Last week the magazine called Pakistan the most dangerous nation in the world. Bush administration has shown little or no understanding of the intricacies of regional politics. If Musharraf-Bhutto power-share is the best US can come-up with in terms of foreign policy in the most volatile nation in the world, the world may be in for big trouble.

CBS is no stranger to controversial interviews. The then Vice President and presidential candidate Bush (41) snapped at Dan Rather for questioning about his (Bush's) involvement in Iran Contra Affair.
Against the administration's wishes, Dan Rather did a controversial interview with Saddam Hussein before US invaded Iraq.
Now, French President Sarkozy walks out of interview with CBS' 60 Minutes. The reason? The reporter asked about Sarkozy's recent divorce with his wife.

If you turned your clocks back one hour Sunday morning thinking it was the annual move back to Standard Time, you must have been in Europe. But if you are in US and moved back the clock, all you succeeded in doing was moving into a new time zone.
Beginning this year, the move from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time doesn't happen this year until the first Sunday in November, instead of the usual last Sunday in October. This change was a result of Congress acting on this pressing issue - on an emergency basis - back in 2005. (Of course, I am being sarcastic). Among other not so pressing issues at that time was Iraq war.
The reason for congress doing this, you ask? Well, they don't want the kids to trick-or-treating late and skip school in the morning of Nov 1.

( 2.9 / 8 )It has ruled that the central and state governments have 90 days to form laws that comply with the directive.
In February 2006 the court said that the states should bring about legislation to make it mandatory for all marriages to be registered.
The move is being opposed by senior members of the Muslim community.
The Supreme Court said that marriage registration must happen regardless of race, creed or religion.
Under the changes, proof of a traditional religious marriage ceremony would not be sufficient.

Bush is not a guitar player.
He just pretended to be one.
That too at the wrong time, on a wrong day.
On August 30, 2005, to be exact!
It was the day after Katrina destroyed the City of New Orleans.
It was the day the Mississippi Gulf coast nearly got destroyed.
On the day he was pretending to play the guitar.....
The scene at the Super Dome in the City of New Orleans
Looked like this....

Bush is not a good leader.
He just pretends to be one.
Heck, he was appointed President by the court.
That too at the wrong time in history.
There is a precedent to this President.
His name was Nero.
He played fiddle while Rome was burning.
Mr. President, LA is burning.
Your Homeland Secretary Chertoff might misinform you,
This time, LA is not the "City" of Louisiana.
It is the City of Los Angeles.
Mr. President, where are you?
I know you want to be hero of our times.
You are just off by one letter.
You are the Nero of our times.

Out-of-control wild files in Southern California are threatening thousands of homes. Included among thousands of people affected by these fires are a lot of people of Telugu origin. My heart goes out to all those who are affected, especially who lost their homes in these fire.

To refer to something that is missing, in Telugu we use a phrase "kaakettukellindi." Literal translation: "the crow took it away."More than $3m donated to the Indian prime minister's fund for victims of the tsunami and the Kashmir earthquake have gone missing, court papers say.
The hole in the accounts came to light through a legal petition filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
Where did the money go? kaakettukellindi!

Everyday, as soon as I wake-up I check to see if TeluguOne Radio, TORI is functioning smoothly. I also place calls to TeluguOne office in Hyderabad to talk to the TORI team. At times the time difference is very frustrating because when I have other pressing things to do, I still have to finish my India calls first, or they will leave for the day. If I have to talk to them when it is morning in India, I have to wait till midnight, by which time all my energy is gone.
When it comes to timezone blues, I suspected that I am not alone. PC World reports: By 2015, India will be just one hub in a vast network from which IT organizations will deliver technology and business skills, according to the report. "Most processes are better candidates for nearshore and remote domestic delivery than they are for 100 percent onsite or 100 percent offshore," says Stiffler.
In response to what Stiffler describes as "India and China fatigue," businesses are seeking relief from the staff attrition and rising salaries that have become the norm in Asia and looking to Latin America and less expensive regions of the U.S. as an increasingly attractive option for IT services delivery.
As the rupee has strengthened against an already weak dollar, Latin American currencies have gained little vis-`-vis the greenback, making that market even more attractive. Large service providers targeting the U.S. market have already expanded into Latin America, with the most popular destinations being Brazil, and more recently, Mexico. U.S. and Indian firms are also opening up new service centers in the Cono Sur countries (the Southern Cone of South America, which consists of Argentina, Chile and Uruguay).
Service providers-and their customers-are also "rediscovering" the good old U.S. of A. Traditional IT services companies likeAccenture,BearingPointandCapGeminiare setting up shop in smaller, less expensive areas like Kansas City; Hattiesburg, Miss.; and Tulsa, Okla. Meanwhile, Indian outsourcers are aggressively building and buying throughout North America.
